SURRY HILLS BOARDING HOUSE

The small site of 277m2 on the corner of Cleveland Street and Chalmers Street contains 33 rooms and two commercial spaces. We were fortunate to inherit a DA for a strong, positive building by HK ArchiDraft. We have refined the design as we have been working on an amended council application and construction documentation. The building has been split into two thin volumes each in a different brick colour, with the face brick being chosen to reflect the face brick school building across the road.

The entry and access to the rooms lies between these volumes and is expressed with vertical louvres at each end. The pop-out windows provide a little relief and the sense of a secondary space in each of the boarding rooms.
